Chet’s guitar has a beautiful tone. Can anybody tell me anything about that guitar?

He was a Gretsch player, which is what the guitar in that video is:

I don’t know much about those guitars, but they’re hollow bodies with special pickups (single-coil?) and the combination creates that smooth sound that works for just about everything. Still very popular with some country and rockabilly acts.

Happy birthday!
Looks like a Gretsch (I can’t read the headstock in the video, but it’s certainly their style), and a quick Google search leads me to believe he was a Gretsch player. As for the tone, I’m willing to bet it’s a combination of the clean hollow-body tone running through a tube amp.
Here’s another example of a finger picked clean hollow body through a tube amp by Josh Small accompanying Tim Barry (at least I’m pretty sure that was the setup he used, he’s playing solo for the last 15 seconds or so of the song):

Chet Atkins quite possibly the smoothest guitar player ever.

Chet was one amazing player. One of my favorite LPs is by him and Les Paul, Chester & Lester.

An underrated artist. Check out “Neck and Neck” his collaboration with Mark Knopfler
And happy birthday!

The Atkins guitars are many.
Bigsby Tremolo

I like the looks of this one:

I think there’s an analog, vacuum tube factor as well.

Pretty radical difference in style between the song and that closing rift.

Part of it is his gear, I am certain, though I’m not trying to take anything away from Chet himself.

Thanks and agreed.

Yes, but can you play it?

I never would have considered the tube amp side of the equation, but I’m sure you are right. Thanks for pointing it out!

Interesting view. I never could have considered it. I find his artistry compelling and that hollow body, tube amp sound, along with his delicate fingers, are unmatched and some of my very favorite music.

A big part of it is his “fingerpicking” style using a thumb pick and his fingers. Jerry Reed used the same style. His equipment does make a big difference that’s for sure but that style picking is hard to master, knowing when to use what technique.

I might be off, but I’ve thought of Chet as more influential among guitarists, than as a popular artist. he’s a virtuoso and innovative, to be sure. I learned of him from my dad, who has many of his 50's-60s lp’s.

I know I sure appreciate him.

Absolutely not.
Shit was like $4500. Thought it would play itself.
